@sophaskins I have stuff in the cloud for my public-facing stuff that I don't want hosted on my own network for a multitude of reasons; but, for stuff for personal use, I pick up refurbished or open box Dell OptiPlex SFF or Micro FF desktops that I run ESXi on and host VMs and what-not on.

@sophaskins It would be silly expensive to run my dev instances of my stuff out in the cloud (even if it's on dinky DigitalOcean or Linode instances vs AWS, GCP or Azure) much less things like Jupyter Notebook server, GitLab CE server, Plex server, etc.

@sophaskins I would still spend the same amount of time doing OS maintenance stuff (be it manual or via tools like Ansible) wherever instances live. Sure, there is hardware at home to maintain, power and cool. But, like with the Intel NUC, Micro FF machines generally sip power and run cool

@sophaskins ...even in an apartment with small portable ACs cooling the place. The only downtime that I've had is either to a power outage due to maintenance that lasted longer than my UPS would for normal outages or when I power off the machines to blow dust out of them ☠️
