      Back when we decommissioned a Pentium Pro Compaq ProLiant server that had been running NT4 domain controller and Exchange roles, I loaded FreeBSD on that and turned it into a log collector and home base for a ton of network tools.

        My current servers at home are refurbished or scratch and dent Dell SFF or #TinyMiniMicro desktops running ESXi. I picked up an Apple refurbished mac Mini Core i3 and that's running local network backup and one of my Windows 10 VMs.

          A while back, I turned a dual P4 Xeon workstation into my primary file server, then turned that into an application server when I ran out of storage space. Old PCs are your friends, especially when you're starting up or bolstering a "home lab".
